National Curriculum Strands:
5. During the key stage, pupils should be taught the Knowledge, skills and understanding through five areas of activity:

6. Pupils should be taught to:
  1. create and perform dances using a range of movement patterns, including those from different times, places and cultures
  2. respond to a range of stimuli and accompaniment.

Unit of study: The Haka
Objectives:

  • For children to perform the range of movements in the Haka in a controlled and safe approach.
  • To use video input to replicate the Haka of the New Zealand Rugby team (The All Blacks).
  • To use resources to learn the accompanying words in order to display an accomplished performance.

Activity 1: What do we know?


  • Children to talk in learning partners to come up with ideas.
  • Class discussion on what the Haka is, where its from etc.
  • Children to come up to IWB to find and then drag the correct answers under the tick and the red herrings under the cross.


Activity 2: The video


  • Children to watch the video link on IWB
  • Discuss movement – is it controlled? What do you notice?
  • Discuss warm up methods –how they could go about it in a safe fashion, like the rugby players do.
  • How does it make you feel? How do you think the other team feel?





Activity 3: In the gym: learning the moves.

Activity 4: In the gym: learning the words



Activity 5: Rehearsal with particular focus on controlled movement and carrying out the routine safely.

Activity 6: Performance in groups – peer assessment opportunity:

  • Were the movements controlled? Safe? In time?
