Museum Education


ICT is being used in Museum Education, through the making information available to school groups to plan their visits to the museums. This can be through the availability of downloadable worksheets, lesson plans and also follow up materials, which children can then access back as school.

Intech Science Museum - Winchester: (KS 1 & 2)

www.intech-uk.com : Intech is a local (to Winchester) Science museum and planetarium, it runs school holiday events and teacher preview evenings. The website is not very interactive for children but contains a host of information for teachers/schools in terms of admission, charges and activities.

The Willis Museum in Basingstoke: (KS 1 & 2)
The Willis museum. This museum is situated in Basingstoke and is about Basingstoke’s journey through time to the modern day. The museum offers workshops, exhibitions and family friendly days. schools links
The website has session plans that the children can follow to lead them around the different parts of the museum.

This link takes you straight to the Kids only section of the natural history museum. It is interactive and includes games, picture galleries and how to ask experts questions they may have.

Hampshire County Council’s Museum and Archive Service

Hampshire County Council's Museum Service has recently created a new job role to look at implementing ICT further into the Museums they run and the service they provide to schools. We contacted Nicole Smith who has overseen this – her job title is ‘Museum Education Officer for New Media’.


The Science Museum - London (KS 1&2):

A link of fun gamesfor children, using their scientific knowledge from the National Science Museum. The games involve different topics of science to generate thinking skills.
Also from the National Science Museum are areas of science for particular interestthat can be explored. Different areas can be accessed via a link and information about topics are bullet pointed and specific facts are stated clearly.
From the National Science Museum, is a webpage showing scientific objects, definitionsand how they are used in science. There are pictures of the objects and a brief paragraph stating what it is and how it is used. The page can be easily printed for children and is not too lengthy, so it keeps their attention.

Auschwitz Concentration Camp (Upper KS2):

The Auschwitz Museum offers educational tours which show children around the concentration camp. There is also an opportunity to hear, ‘Voices of Memory’ which allows children to hear extracts from people who were prisoners of war in the concentration camps.

The Imperial War Museum - London (KS2):



The Imperial War Museum offers a wide range of programmes accessed via the internet. There are also resources that can be accessed from the web with regards to the Holocaust and the WW2.
